Associationism & Religiosity - Mariana A. FABREGA

ABSTRACT

The consideration of associationism as a reference and expression frame not only of a religious feeling and charitable attitudes but also of an instance of social practices related to the public power sphere, provides an analytical approach that allows us to investigate the different percepctions that will develop in the different spaces of the urban web.

Thus, different trends -some times coincident, others perhaps questioning- can be observed, which refer to the question of the established social order and which are just symbolic roads to building and recreating permanent relationships and identities. In this context, life in the confraternities would be a clear manifestation of the tensions and agreements to be found.

Therefore, it is essential to consider these patterns within the real and also symbolic frame of reference: Ávila. We should take into account that Ávila was the stage where the trends towards associationism and religiosity were expressed and where the redefinitions made by the people concerned were shown throughout the Modern times and, later, in the transformations connected with the Enlightment's view.
